Student Readiness Check

Before testing, schools should complete a student readiness check. This session gives students the chance to:

  • Sign in to Bluebook
  • Ensure their personal information is correct
  • Run a quick device check
  • Complete exam setup
  • Try out a test preview
  • Start a practice test, which they can finish at home

Completing exam setup during the readiness check saves time on test day and can boost student confidence, reduce stress, and allow them to get the most out of what the SAT Suite of Assessments has to offer. All students are required to complete exam setup before testing.

The student readiness check can be completed in 30 minutes or less. We suggest completing this session as soon as possible but no later than one week before test day. Each school needs to complete the student readiness check for each test administration within the testing window.

On this page, we lay out a plan that can help educators fit the student readiness check into their busy schedules. We also provide a Student Readiness Check slide deck, which educators can use alongside the plan as a visual aid for students.

Beforehand: Prepare Devices and Sign-in Tickets

Coordinate with technology staff to prepare your network and devices. They can find tips at Technical Prep for the Student Readiness Check.

Test coordinators need to print sign-in tickets from Test Day Toolkit for all students in each testing room before the student readiness check.

  • In Test Day Toolkit, test coordinators click Downloads on the homepage to print sign-in tickets for the student readiness check. Printing sign-in tickets won't start the test.
  • Students use the information printed on their ticket to access Bluebook. Instructions for distributing sign-in tickets are in the student readiness check section of the Test Coordinator Manual.

Reminders:

  • Do not use Test Day Toolkit during the student readiness check. Once the test coordinators have printed the sign-in tickets, Test Day Toolkit won't be used again for the student readiness check. The student readiness check is completed in Bluebook.
  • Students do not need room or start codes for this activity.

Opening: Why This Activity Matters

(Up to 5 Minutes)

Slides 1–3 in the Student Readiness Check slide deck.

Key message: This activity can help students develop familiarity with Bluebook, test their devices, complete exam setup, activate opportunities, and access a practice test.

Say:

"Today we're going to do the student readiness check, which checks your device and lets you complete exam setup. This is your chance to try everything out in Bluebook before test day. You can also unlock free tools that help with college and career planning and start a practice test."

Optional: Future Planning Extension

(5 Minutes)

Slides 4–5 in the Student Readiness Check slide deck.

Provide students with information about how:

  • The SAT connects them to college options
  • BigFuture School helps them explore colleges and careers
  • Opting in to Connections™ lets College Board share information about educational organizations looking for students like them

Then ask students to think about and identify:

  • 1 college they're curious about
  • 1 career pathway they're interested in
  • Whether they want to opt in to Connections

Sign In, Check Information, and Device Check

(5 Minutes)

Slide 6 in the Student Readiness Check slide deck.

Have students use their sign-in tickets to sign in to Bluebook.

Say:

"Check any personal information and accommodations listed under Your Tests to make sure they're right."

Then say:

"Click Test Your Device. Bluebook will run a check to make sure it can work on your device."

Exam Setup Walk-Through

(5–10 Minutes)

Slide 6 in the Student Readiness Check slide deck.

Have students complete exam setup.

Say:

"Under Your Tests, click on Start Exam Setup. Bluebook will lead you through setup, and I'm here if you have any questions."

Bluebook guides students through setup.

NOTE: Students should not try to check in to their test. If they see a screen asking them to enter the room code, they're in the check-in flow and should be redirected to exam setup.

Test Preview

(5–10 Minutes)

Slides 7–19 in the Student Readiness Check slide deck.

Have students complete a test preview.

Say:

"Under Practice and Prepare, click on Test Preview. Bluebook will open the test preview. It's a short set of questions that lets you experience digital testing and try out all the tools so you're ready for test day. You won't receive scores or feedback on your answers."

Students complete the test preview on their own. While they are doing so, you can point out the built-in universal tools (like the highlighter and option eliminator, as well as the More menu), the timing structure, and how to navigate between questions.

Practice

(5–10 Minutes)

Slide 20 in the Student Readiness Check slide deck. You can use the slides to guide the students or let them explore on their own.

Walk students through how to start a practice test. They can finish their practice test at home, so you may want to ask them to complete it as homework.

Say:

"These tests are scored and timed like a real test, except you can move forward from one section to the next before time expires. You can also pause the test, so you can start it now and then finish it later, at home."

Then tell students to click on Full-Length Practice under Practice and Prepare.

NOTE: If students see a screen asking them to enter a room or start code, they are not looking at the practice test and should be redirected to it.

Wrap Up

(Up to 5 minutes)

Slides 21–24 in the Student Readiness Check slide deck. If your school prohibits mobile devices, skip slide 22.

Remind students about their next steps for SAT success:

  • Finish their practice test at home.
  • Review the appropriate student guide.
  • Get ready for test day by using College Board's practice resources, getting a good night's sleep, and leaving any prohibited devices at home.

Then complete the activity by answering lingering questions. Have students take home their sign-in tickets to finish their practice test.

For more comprehensive instructions for preparing for and administering the readiness check, there is a student readiness check chapter in both the Test Coordinator Manual and Proctor Manual.
