What Students Should and Should Not Bring on Test Day

Students are expected to bring the following on test day:

  • Acceptable photo ID if they're an away student or testing at a school they don't regularly attend. (Review the SAT Suite ID requirements.) Digital IDs aren't acceptable.
  • Fully charged testing device with Bluebook installed.
  • Personal calculator, as described in the SAT Calculator Policy, if the student doesn't wish to use the built-in Desmos calculator in Bluebook.
  • Pen or pencil for scratch work (doesn't have to be a No. 2 pencil).

Students may choose to bring the following on test day (unless prohibited by their school):

  • A power cord and/or a portable charger. (Access to an outlet during testing isn't guaranteed.)
  • An external mouse and mouse pad if students use one.
  • An external keyboard if students use one. (Only permitted with tablets—not laptops.)

Students are prohibited from bringing the following items on test day (unless they have an approved accommodation):

  • Electronic equipment including phones, smartwatches, smart glasses, fitness trackers, wearable technology, cameras, recording or listening devices, or any other type of electronic or communication device except for their testing device used for the digital test and, if applicable, any assistive technology as part of an approved accommodation.
  • All stylus pens, Apple Pencils, smart pens, or other electronic writing instruments.
  • Books, notes, compasses, rulers, protractors, dictionaries, highlighters, or colored pencils (translated test directions and word-to-word dictionaries are permitted for test takers using EL supports).
  • Watches that beep, make a noise, or have an alarm.
  • Calculators that aren't acceptable.
  • Detachable privacy screens.
  • Reference guides, keyboard maps, or other typing instructions.
  • Headphones, earbuds, or earplugs (unless the student is using approved assistive technology that requires them; headphones are required for students using text-to-speech or a screen reader).
  • Hats or head coverings (except when worn for medical or religious reasons), which may be worn into the testing room but must be removed and stored under the student's desk during testing.
Note: Hoodies may be worn in the testing room, but the hood must be down during testing.
  • Weapons or firearms.
