Why Choose the SAT?

The SAT helps students know and show what they've learned, giving them a trusted measure of college and career readiness. Beyond admission, it opens doors to $300 million in scholarships, provides personalized college and career insights, and helps students make informed decisions about what comes next.

The SAT is widely accepted for college entrance exam requirements, but colleges use SAT scores for more than admissions. They help identify students who are ready to succeed, inform course placement and advising, and connect students with the support they need to thrive once they arrive on campus.

Virginia students who have taken other College Board assessments, such as AP Exams and the PSAT/NMSQT, may already be familiar with the SAT. Students can also access Official SAT Prep through Khan Academy® to get ready for the SAT—for free.

Districts and schools can order SAT School Day for the 2026-27 school year in our SAT Suite Ordering and Registration (SSOR) system, the same place where the PSAT/NMSQT, PSAT 10, and PSAT 8/9 are ordered.

Timeline Important Dates

The following table provides an overview of the different components of a digital test administration, reflecting the typical sequence of these events.

School Testing Team

For the digital SAT School Day, we recommend each school establish a team of staff to plan for and support test administration. Team member roles include:

  • Test Coordinator: Expected to be at the school to supervise all activities related to the test administration. They are responsible for staff recruitment, training, and assignments; overseeing the use of facilities; supervising all activities of the test administration; and handling any emergencies or disruptions. The test coordinator and Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD) coordinator are also the two roles responsible for reviewing accommodations and ensuring students testing with accommodations and supports have a smooth administration.
  • SSD Coordinator: Responsible for supporting students who'll be testing with accommodations. This includes requesting accommodations and supports, validating student accommodations data, helping the test coordinator to seat students in appropriate groups, and working with proctors and technology coordinators to ensure students can test successfully with their accommodations.
  • Technology Coordinator: Can be a district- or school-level staff member but must have the expertise and permissions to install Bluebook on managed devices and configure the network (or manage staff who do). The IT professionals at your school can explore the list of relevant responsibilities at bluebook.org/tech.
  • Technology Monitor: Help students and staff with technical issues on test day in a designated help room.
  • Proctors: Responsible for conducting a secure, valid administration. They're accountable for everyone in the testing room and everything that takes place in their room.
  • Hall/Room Monitors: Assist with test administration duties. Monitors don't administer the test, but they'll have access to Test Day Toolkit to help direct students to their assigned rooms, answer questions, monitor testing areas, and submit irregularities if needed.

School counselors won't necessarily play a role on test day, but they can help students make the most of their SAT scores by sharing insights, indicating potential for AP coursework, and more. Ensuring that counselors are aware and engaged helps high school students plan for their future.

Setting Up a College Board Professional Account

A College Board professional account provides online access to a variety of College Board tools and services for all administration staff. To create an account, go to collegeboard.org, click Create Account, and follow the instructions. An educator only needs to create an account once.

Test day staff will use their College Board professional account to access updates and the following tools and services:

  • K–12 Score Reporting Portal: For access to a detailed roster report and test scores.
  • SSD Online: To submit requests for accommodations and certain English learner (EL) supports and to make changes to existing approved accommodations for students.
  • Test Day Toolkit: The web application that all testing staff use to administer the digital SAT Suite of Assessments.

Students with Disabilities

SSD coordinators can apply for accommodations for students who do not have approved accommodations, or request changes to existing accommodation approvals, through SSD Online.

Ensuring that students with disabilities can test with accommodations is a priority for College Board. All requests are considered and must be submitted to College Board at least seven weeks before test day. To use accommodations, students must be approved in SSD Online.

PSAT 8/9 students may be eligible for One-Time Supports, which are applied by the test and SSD coordinators in SSOR during registration. Read more about PSAT 8/9 One-Time Supports.

Setting Up Access

SSD coordinators oversee aspects of the SAT School Day administration for students testing with accommodations.

SSD coordinators use SSD Online to request accommodations for students. To access SSD Online, the school must designate an SSD coordinator who will be responsible for testing accommodations for College Board exams. To access the system, they must:

English Learner Supports

English learner supports are also available for English learners who take SAT School Day and PSAT-related assessments. These students have access to up to time and one-half, text-to-speech for Math only, translated test directions, and a list of College Board–approved word-to-word bilingual dictionaries.

SAT School Day Glossary

Attending Institution (AI) Code: A College Board identification code assigned to a school. A Level 1 code allows a school to receive in-school score reports; a Level 2 code allows a school, in addition, to order and administer in-school assessments such as SAT School Day, PSAT-related assessments, and AP Exams.

Bluebook: The digital testing app students use to take College Board assessments.

SAT Suite Ordering and Registration (SSOR): The online system schools and districts use to register and enroll students for the SAT Suite of Assessments.

Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD): The College Board office responsible for receiving and approving requests for students to test with accommodations and supports through the SSD Online portal.

Test Day Toolkit: The web application testing staff use to administer College Board assessments.
