The School Code (AI Code)
In order to access College Board assessments and services, you'll first need a school code, also known as an Attending Institution (AI) code.
A school code is a six-digit identifier that allows schools to receive in school assessments reporting or to order and administer in school assessments.
You can request a school code via our online request form. Please note that the request should come from the school principal or district superintendent. If they are unable to make the request, they should provide a letter on school or district letterhead authorizing an alternate requester to submit the form on their behalf. This letter should be attached to the request form. For additional help requesting a school code, review our walkthrough guide.
School codes are available at two different levels. A Level 1 school code allows you to receive in-school reporting. Level 1 codes do not require as much information and vetting. A Level 2 school code allows access to reporting and ordering/administration of in school assessments. You will need to submit additional information to receive a Level 2 code.
NOTE: A school code and a test center code are not the same. School codes are used for in-school assessments and AP exams. Test center codes are used for SAT Weekend administrations. For more information about becoming an SAT Weekend test center, visit Test Center Requirements.
FAQ
What is required for my school to get a Level 1 school code?
You'll need to provide the school's physical location and proof that the school offers an academic discipline approved by College Board (course that can be added to student transcript or report card) or a language course.
What is required for my school to get a Level 2 school code?
You'll need to provide the school's physical location and confirm that it meets the College Board requirements for testing. These requirements include appropriate staffing, accreditation, academic disciplines, student/teacher ratio, and no conflicts of interest.
When is the latest a school can request a school code before administering a test?
The process to approve and administer your school code may take 7–10 business days without interruption. Occasionally, we may need more information from you or have a large volume of requests in our queue. We strongly recommend you submit a request for a school code at least 10 weeks before your chosen testing date if you plan on administering an in-school assessment. This window will give your SSD coordinator enough time to request accommodations for any students who need them to test. For additional information, visit Test Dates and Deadlines.
If you plan on administering AP exams, review the deadlines for that program and request a code within the same timeframe.
Which assessments or programs require a school code to administer?
All College Board assessments require a school code. If you are administering an in-school assessment in the SAT Suite (SAT School Day, PSAT/NMSQT, PSAT 10, or PSAT 8/9) or an AP exam, your school must have a Level 2 code. To become an SAT Weekend test center, your school must have a Level 1 code.
How long does it normally take to get a school code?
Under normal conditions, you can expect it to take about 7–10 business days for College Board to review, approve, and create your school code. We may request more information from you during this process, so be sure to provide that information in an efficient manner to ensure your request is not delayed.
Please note that if your school is located outside the United States, it may take up to 15 business days to process your request under normal conditions.
Who should I contact if I have technical issues with the school code request form?
If you are having technical difficulties with the code request form, you can call Code Services at 866-609-2247 or email [email protected].
Which types of accreditation do I need to request a school code?
If your school is not publicly accredited, the request form will allow you to include information about alternate accreditation agencies. You will need to provide supporting documents to confirm this accreditation.
I received an email alerting me that additional information is required to continue processing my application for a school code. What do I do?
If you receive an email alert requesting more information, please log into the College Board Code Request Portal, review the additional information requested, and address any of the issues mentioned in the email you received. Some examples of additional information we may request include ensuring the school's name on your application matches the school’s website, providing accreditation documentation, or confirming approval from your principal or superintendent for you to send in the request as their surrogate.
Are virtual, charter, private, and homeschool associations eligible for school codes?
Nonpublic schools are eligible to request school codes, but they must meet our criteria to administer the assessment. A school that does not meet those requirements may be eligible for a Level 1 reporting code.
What is an ambassador code?
An ambassador school code is only applicable for SAT Weekend testing needs and is for noneducational institutions.
Who can request a school code?
Your school principal or district superintendent should send in the request for a school code. If they are unable to do so, please provide a letter on school or district letterhead that authorizes an alternate requester to submit the school code request form. You can attach this letter and any other supporting documents to the form.
Do I need to provide any documents to request a school code?
Yes, we may ask you to provide supporting documentation when you submit a request for a school code, including accreditation records, a letter authorizing you to submit the request on behalf of your school principal or district superintendent, or other information. You will receive an email alerting you to these requests for additional information.
How can I ensure my school code request is processed quickly?
To avoid processing delays, ensure that you are authorized to submit the school code request by your principal or superintendent. Respond to any requests for additional information as quickly as possible.
What happens after I receive my Level 2 school code?
Once you receive your Level 2 school code, you are approved to administer in-school assessments from College Board! You can find more information to help you begin the process of training your staff, ordering tests, and preparing your technology on the In-School Educator Experience.
Do I need to apply for a school code if my state administers in-school assessments as part of an accountability contract?
If your school is administering College Board assessments as part of a state accountability contract, you do not need to apply for a school code. Your school will be assigned an Attending Institution (AI) code during the fall school establishment process. Your principal and the school test coordinator will receive an email confirming the AI code in January.
