FAQ
How do I register a student who is testing at my school but doesn't attend my school (away students)?
Registering students using the Attending AI Code field in SSOR
Away students must be registered using the Attending AI Code of the school they normally attend, or by using an Attending AI Code used to indicate the student is homeschooled.
An AI Code, also referred to as a School Code or College Entrance Examination Board (CEEB) code, is a unique 6-digit code provided by College Board that allows schools to order and administer in-school assessments and/or receive score reporting for in-school assessments. You must use the Attending AI Code field in SSOR to identify the school a student attends prior to registering them to test. This field indicates where student scores should be sent after they've tested. Failure to provide an accurate Attending AI Code in this field will result in student information and scores being sent to a school, district, or state that it wasn't intended to be sent to. So, this is a very important step in the SSOR registration process. For help finding a school's AI Code, use the K–12 School Code Search tool.
Using the Attending AI Code when uploading student data in SSOR
The Attending AI Code field in a student file upload in SSOR is an optional field. Don't leave this field blank for a student you're testing who doesn't regularly attend your school. If you leave this field blank, SSOR will assume the student is testing at the same school they attend and will default the Attending AI Code to the same code provided in the Testing AI Code field. If you're including an away student in your file upload, provide the correct AI code in this field using the instructions provided further on this page to ensure their scores are sent to the correct school.
Using the Attending AI Code when validating uploaded data in SSOR
To view the AI code associated to students in SSOR, click on the student's name. If the Attending AI Code field is blank, SSOR will default the Attending AI Code to the same code provided in the Testing AI Code field, or the school the student is testing at (your school). If the student you're viewing in SSOR doesn't attend your school, you need to validate that the correct AI code is provided in this field. Instructions for confirming the correct AI code that should be populated in this field are further down on this page. You can edit the student's SSOR record and update the AI code as needed prior to registering the student to test.
Additionally, SSOR has been enhanced to provide counts of away students in the online registration roster in Step 2 of SSOR. Be sure the count provided here matches the number of students you know you're testing who don't attend your school. If it doesn't, be sure to review your online registration roster and edit students accordingly with the AI code for the school they attend.
Registering students who attend a different school than mine (away students)
You'll be required to provide the AI code of the student's school in the Attending AI Code field in your data file upload or enter this value in the same field when manually adding the student to your school's registration roster using the Add Student option in SSOR. You can request the student provide you with this information or look up the AI code of the student's school using College Board's K–12 School Code Search tool.
It's important you provide this information so the student's scores are reported to the correct school after test day.
If there is no AI code for the student's school, you should use one of the following codes:
- 000003 for U.S. students
- 000004 for non-U.S. students
Scores for students who have one of these codes provided on their registration will not have their scores reported to any K–12 institutions. Only students will have access to these scores.
Registering homeschooled students (away students)
Homeschooled students testing with accommodations
For all homeschooled students testing with accommodations, use 970000 in the Attending AI Code field.
All other homeschooled students
For students who live in the United States, provide the homeschool AI code for the student's state in the Attending AI Code field. Refer to the resource provided below to find the correct AI code.
For students who live outside the U.S., use one of the following codes in the Attending AI Code field:
- 995499 for students in a U.S. territory
- 995599 for students outside of the U.S. and U.S. territories
Scores for students who have one of these codes provided on their registration will not have their scores reported to any K–12 institutions. Only students will have access to these scores.
For districts including a student who doesn't attend one of their schools in a file upload
Districts uploading student data for their schools will be required to provide a student ID in the School Student ID field in their upload. This ID is the student ID used by the school to identify that student. When including a student in your district file upload who doesn't attend a school in your district, you're still required to provide an ID in the School Student ID field. For these students, we recommend using the AI code of the student's school in addition to their first and last name. As an example: 123456JaneSmith.
You should additionally follow the instructions provided above related to the AI Code you provide for away students being tested at your schools.
