Digital Testing Applications

You'll need to be familiar with the applications and requirements for digital tests in order to prepare for test day.

Bluebook and Test Day Toolkit

Bluebook and Test Day Toolkit work together to make digital testing possible for the SAT, PSAT-related assessments, and AP Exams.

Bluebook is the app students use to take tests and must be installed on student devices before test day. Learn more about Bluebook device readiness and installation.

Coordinators and staff use Test Day Toolkit to administer tests. They can use any device that connects to the internet. They can access Test Day Toolkit with a College Board professional account. Learn more about Test Day Toolkit.

Accommodations on Digital Tests

Test timing and breaks are all handled within Bluebook. For example, accommodated breaks work as follows:

  • Students approved for extra breaks receive breaks automatically between modules and sections of the test. These are 5 minutes long, unless the student also gets extended breaks or a nutrition break. The student doesn’t need to pause the test.
  • Students approved for extended (longer) breaks receive breaks that are twice as long as the breaks they would otherwise receive. (A nutrition break, if any, will still be 20 minutes long). They won’t need to pause the test.
  • Students approved for breaks as needed will see a Pause button that allows them to activate a break whenever it’s needed. The number and length of breaks will vary.
  • Extended time testing includes additional breaks between relevant modules of the test and may include a longer nutrition break between sections.
  • NEW! Students approved for extended time no longer need to stay for their full extended time. They must stay until standard time has fully elapsed and they have finished testing.
  • NEW! Beginning in spring 2025, Bluebook will include an embedded text-to-speech tool for students who require reading assistance as an accommodation. This built-in tool eliminates the need for external technology, reducing configuration issues and providing a more standardized experience for students across different devices. No configuration is required. For more information, see SSD Updates.

See the Accommodations Guides located in the Test Coordinator Manual or Proctor Manual for more information about how accommodations are provided in digital testing and how to administer breaks, including nutrition breaks.

More details are found under Using Accommodations.

SDMS

Detailed information about using State Data Management System (SDMS), student registration process, and permissions for testing staff will be provided during their role- and state-specific training.

Preparing Your Technology

Test coordinators will work with school or district technology staff to prepare the network and testing devices for test day. An internet connection is required at the start and end of the test, but students can keep testing if their connection drops momentarily.

A help room is required for digital testing. If technical issues happen on test day, staff will direct students to the technology monitor in the help room.

Note: Consult your state resources to learn when you and your staff will interact with each of these applications.
